CANTON, October 6. Activity of the French. The French river-gus boats arrived in Canton late on Friday afternoon. They kre a welcome addition to those already available for service on the West River and the Delta generally. The sending of the -French gunlat Avalanche to Shun Tak has created a good impression, in many quar- ters. The feeling in the Chinese mind is that the French are not to be trifled with-

healthy and helpful idea and one that makes for peace.
